Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Tunde Lemo, has formally indicated his interest in contesting the 2027 governorship election in Ogun State. Lemo made his intentions known on Wednesday during the All Progressives Congress (APC) ward congress held at Ward 12, Ita Agemo, Igbein, in Abeokuta. While stopping short of a formal declaration, he confirmed his gubernatorial ambition when pressed by journalists, framing his decision as a commitment to accelerating grassroots development in his home state.
“Yes, of course, I have my eyes on 2027 just like everyone else, but everything is in the hands of God,” Lemo stated.
The former central bank chief emphasized that Ogun State possesses significant agricultural potential that requires the right leadership to harness for the benefit of its people. He assured party faithful of an inclusive government and unwavering loyalty to the APC if he emerges as the party’s standard-bearer.
“I don’t want to canvass for personal position here, but you all know who I am, and you know what I’ve been trying to do. But by the special grace of God, it is about governance. It’s about raising the bar and ensuring the best for our people, and that’s what we’re doing,” he said.
Lemo attributed the peaceful conduct of the ward congresses across the state to what he described as the transformative policies of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. He said the exercise was conducted to further solidify the existing unity and harmony within the party’s fold.
“We are very strong and very vibrant, and people are happy because of the transformative agenda of President Bola Tinubu,” Lemo remarked.
He also lauded the developmental trajectory of incumbent Governor Dapo Abiodun, particularly commending the creation of the Agro-cargo Airport, which has received approval to commence commercial flights. The ex-CBN boss noted that Abiodun’s administration has set the state on a progressive path.
Addressing the crowd at the ward congress, Lemo underscored the organic nature of the APC, pointing to the large turnout and absence of acrimony as evidence of the party’s strength in the state.
“You have not seen anybody fighting. We are members of one family,” he said, expressing excitement over what he described as loyal party membership.
