Dr Mikhail Akinde, the Acting Vice-Chancellor, Federal University of Technology, Ilaro (FUTI), has disclosed that 233 students of the institution have benefited from the Federal Government’s Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).
Akinde stated this on Monday at a news conference ahead of the institution’s 23rd convocation ceremony scheduled for Wednesday at its campus in Ilaro, Ogun.
The acting vice chancellor commended the federal government, describing the loan scheme as a lifeline for financially challenged students, enabling them continue their academic pursuits without disruption.
According to him, some students who might have been barred from writing examinations were able to do so because they were captured under the NELFUND scheme.
”NELFUND is already making a significant difference in the lives of our students.
“Some who would have been denied access to examinations were able to sit for their papers because their names appeared on the NELFUND list,” he said.
Speaking on activities lined up for the convocation, Akinde identified innovation and project exhibition as a major highlight, saying that it would showcase research output and student-driven innovations.
He described the exhibition as a demonstration of the role of research and innovation in addressing real-life challenges.
The acting vice chancellor emphasised that fostering a culture of research was essential for sustainable development and economic growth.
“The exhibition is our way of showing the world what we have achieved over the years. From cutting-edge technology to practical solutions, these projects reflect our commitment to excellence and real-world relevance,” he said.
He stressed the need for stronger collaboration with industries, adding that local production of innovative solutions would reduce dependence on imports.
“If we strengthen collaboration and mass-produce some of these innovations, Nigeria will reduce reliance on imports. We want industries to see how technological institutions can support them,” he said.
Akinde announced that Gov. Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Gov . Dikko Radda of Katsina, the Alake of Egbaland, Oba Adedotun Gbadebo, and the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rasheed Ladoja, would be conferred with honorary fellowships.(NAN)
