The Executive Chairman of Agege Local Government, Hon. Tunde Azeez, popularly known as Disco, resigned from his position on Wednesday, citing ongoing health challenges that have impaired his ability to govern.
In a letter submitted to the Agege Local Government Legislative Arm, Azeez stated that his health issues had “significantly impacted his ability to discharge his duties.”
The Legislative Council, after what it described as “thorough deliberation,” unanimously passed a resolution accepting his resignation, effective immediately. The house acknowledged Azeez’s dedication to public service and wished him well in his future endeavors.
Following the acceptance of the resignation, the council swiftly moved to appoint a successor, unanimously approving Hon. AbdulGaniyu Vinod Obasa as the new substantive Chairman of Agege Local Government. The move, according to the house, is to ensure “seamless governance and leadership continuity.”
“It is true, Disco has resigned. You know he has been sick all along. So after several months of staying away from the office, he eventually decided to resign. The councillors are still having a meeting after receiving the resignation letter. So, to answer your question, Hon Tunde Azeez has resigned and Vinod Obasa has taken over as full Chairman.” A council worker who is privy to the development told TheWest newspaper on conditions of anonymity.
This transition brings to a head political speculations that have surrounded the local government’s leadership. Last July, after the LG Poll, Disco was declared the duly elected chairman by the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) after the local government election, having secured 31,503 votes.
However, prior to the party primary, there were reports of internal party dynamics. It was alleged that former chairman Ganiu Egunjobi hurriedly purchased an expression of interest form for Azeez after party members raised concerns that Mudashiru Obasa, a prominent political figure in the state assembly, intended to impose his son, Vinod Obasa, as the chairmanship candidate.
This fueled insinuations that Azeez may have been placed in the race as a placeholder candidate. These speculations were further amplified in recent months, as the chairman had been away from his duties, with Vinod Obasa serving in an acting capacity until his confirmation as the substantive chairman on Wednesday.
