The federal competition and consumer and protection commission, (FCCPC), has closed down the Chinese supermarket located within the China General Chamber of Commerce in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Officials from FCCPC sealed up the place on Monday following a video of a Nigerian being denied entrance into the supermarket.
It would be recalled that earlier on Sunday, Nigerians had expressed outrage over a discriminatory policy implemented by the Chinese Supermarket, which restricted entry exclusively to its citizens and barred Nigerians.
This discovery generated a lot of bad feelings among Nigerians who described the supermarket’s policy as discriminatory. They called on the government to intervene.
The Facility manager of the complex, Shaibu Sanusi confirmed that Nigerians from outside the complex do not shop but Nigerians within the facility can have access to the submarket located along Abuja Airport Road.
Although, the Supermarket remains shut currently, the consumer protection agency believes that some people are still hiding inside the supermarket in a bid to avoid confrontation with the agency.
The facility workers revealed that the owner of the supermarket a Chinese lady, Cindy Liu Bei fled on Monday morning around 8:26am with her family as confirmed on the CCTV camera within the facility.
The leadership of the FCCPC delegation went ahead to stamp a summon letter on the gates of the supermarket. While speaking to press, FCCPC said the owner has until Wednesday April 23 to report to the commission for questioning.
The agency also said no one should be discriminated in their home country and that the shop will still be closed until the investigation from the viral video is complete.
