A major catastrophe was averted on Friday afternoon after a swift and coordinated response by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service contained a fire outbreak at the A1 Petroleum Filling Station on Isawo Road, off Agric Bus Stop in Ikorodu.
The emergency call was received at 12:58 p.m., reporting that a 45,000-litre petroleum tanker, with registration number IKD 479 XV, had caught fire while discharging its contents at the station.

According to a statement released by Olajide Ogabi, Deputy Controller General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, fire crews from the Ikorodu and Alausa Fire Stations were immediately dispatched to the scene. Their prompt intervention was critical in containing the blaze, which was successfully confined to the tanker itself and just one of the station’s six dispensing pumps.
“Swift intervention by our firefighters ensured that the blaze was contained, with no casualties recorded,” stated Ogabi. “The fire was restricted to the tanker and one dispensing pump, effectively preventing escalation.”
However, the main station building, the attached mart, the underground storage tanks, and the gas skid were all preserved from any damage, preventing a potential massive explosion and environmental disaster.
The cause of the fire is not yet known and is likely to be under investigation.
In the wake of the incident, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service issued a firm advisory to all stakeholders in the oil and gas sector, urging them to “uphold the highest safety standards.” The service also reaffirmed its “unwavering commitment to protecting lives, property, and the environment across the State.”
