Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has approved the recruitment of an additional 1,000 Amotekun personnel to strengthen security across the state. The new recruits are part of efforts to bolster the security apparatus and address unemployment. Governor Abiodun also pledged to provide more patrol vehicles, electric motorcycles, communication gadgets, and other resources to aid the Amotekun Corps in carrying out their duties efficiently.
This announcement was made during the passing-out parade of 690 Batch D Amotekun trainees at the Gateway International Stadium in Sagamu on Saturday. The governor emphasized that the establishment of the Amotekun Corps is aimed at reinforcing security, especially at the grassroots level, while also tackling joblessness.
Governor Abiodun approved the recruitment of 1,000 additional members, bringing the total to over 2,000, with competitive remuneration aligned with the civil service structure. He also assured that additional logistics, including vehicles and electric motorcycles, would be provided to enhance the Corps’ operations.
The governor described the passing-out parade as a critical step in enhancing Ogun State’s security. The new recruits will be tasked with patrolling key roads and communities. He highlighted that the Corps complements federal efforts in tackling insecurity and will work in collaboration with other security agencies to combat criminal activities.
In his address, Governor Abiodun praised the trainees’ discipline and dedication, expressing confidence that their commitment would inspire those who had left the Corps to rejoin. He urged the recruits to approach their work with integrity and use intelligence-gathering and community cooperation, particularly with traditional rulers, to foster effective policing.
He said, “Based on what I have seen regarding your level of preparedness and commitment, I am today approving the recruitment of another 1,000 Amotekun Corps members.
“This will bring the total strength to over 2,000, and they will be remunerated appropriately in line with the civil service structure.
“I will also be approving additional logistics, including vehicles, electric motorcycles, and other necessary tools to ensure you can perform your responsibilities to the best of your abilities.”
He also stated that the deployment of the Amotekun Corps sends a clear message to criminals, warning that Ogun State will not be a safe haven for illegal activities. The governor anticipates improved security in the state in the near future.
Governor Abiodun acknowledged the efforts of the pioneer Commander of the Corps and called on residents to support the Corps by sharing information that could help prevent and solve crimes.
Brig. Gen. Alade Adedigba (Rtd), Commandant of the Corps, in his welcome address, praised the rigorous training the recruits underwent, including physical training, weapon handling, and intelligence gathering. He thanked the state government for its support, including repairs to patrol vehicles and the provision of new uniforms and communication equipment. Adedigba urged the new recruits to serve within the bounds of the law, work in collaboration with other security agencies, and remain committed to maintaining peace and order in the state.
