As Nigeria celebrates another Democracy Day, Mr Sunkanmi Oyejide, the Youth Leader, People’s Democratic Party (PDP), in Ogun, has noted that despite some challenges, there has been notable strides towards strengthening democratic governance in Nigeria.
Oyejide noted that Civil society organisations, the media, and grassroots movements had played crucial roles in advocating for transparency, accountability, and electoral reforms.
He added that the increasing engagement of the youth in politics and activism also signals a growing demand for change and a more accountable government.
The PDP youth leader explained that despite making significant progress in its democratic journey, the path forward required addressing the entrenched issues of corruption, violence, and insecurity.
” Strengthening institutions, promoting transparency, and ensuring accountability are essential for consolidating democracy and fostering a more stable and prosperous Nigeria,” he said.
He also noted that immunity enjoyed by certain political office holders in Nigeria further complicated the democratic landscape.
” The immunity enjoyed by certain political office holders in Nigeria further complicates the democratic landscape.
” Under the Nigerian Constitution, the President, Vice President, Governors, and Deputy Governors are granted immunity from prosecution while in office.
” This provision is intended to allow these leaders to perform their duties without the fear of legal repercussions; however, it has also been criticized for enabling corruption and impunity.
” Many argue that this immunity clause shields corrupt officials from accountability, allowing them to engage in unethical practices without fear of legal consequences.
” As a result, the public’s trust in political institutions has been eroded, and calls for reform have intensified,” he said.
