As the global marks Environment Day 2026, Nigerians have called for conceited effort to mitigate the challenges of environmental awareness and safeguard of natural resources. The call was made at a Hiking for the environment put together by Nigeria adventurers in Abuja to mark the World environment day 2026.
Marked every 5th of June, the day is an opportunity to reflect on the role we play in shaping a healthy environment and a more sustainable future.
This year’s UN campaign focuses on the urgent signals the Earth is sending and how humanity can respond, adapt, and build resilience against climate.
Climate advocates have described environmental sustainability as a shared civic responsibility requiring sustained collaboration and active citizen participation.
Climate Advocate, Tosin Komolafe, say the continent of Africa is working towards sustainable living and meeting the SDGs but a lot still need to be done.
“So in terms of policy making and moving from renewable energy, I think we are doing a lot in terms of policy making but in terms of implementation, we have not gone far. Agencies in Environmental sector should be empowered financially, get the youths involved get the people aware, get away from putting policy in place to actually implementing those policies.
“I believe that this hike is a call for a cleaner and we have to transcend from the old fuel to clean energy and electrical and all others so I am big on clean energy and climate change,” said Off and ON, Climate Advocate.Chief operating officer Nigeria Adventures Abuja, Harietta Adeyemi, explained that the day is dear to their heart because they know and understand the importance of keeping the environment tidy.
“Please let’s stop littering, it’s a very simple thing, just get a carrier bag and leave it in your car, if you need to through away anything, put it in your car, when you get to your destination, then you can trash it. Also let’s imbibe recycling, let’s not throw our plastic away, you can make money from it,.
“Part of our goal is to promote, nature, hiking and also preserve the environment, most of the places we go for hiking are bushes, mountain and these are the places we call our home and if we don’t preserve it who will? We are the people who go to these places and enjoy the beauty of nature, said Adebayo Babatunde, founder Nigeria Adventurers.Some Participants at the hike for greener environment say they are expected to use the platform to amplify calls for greener communities, sustainable environmental practices, and stronger public in addressing climate-related challenges affecting the country.
As the world marks Environment Day 2026, humans are reminded that protecting nature is about protecting ourselves.
