A member of the House of Representatives, Adigun Abass, aka Agboworin, representing Ibadan South East/North East Federal Constituency, is trending across various social media platforms.
Abass appears in a video recorded during a House plenary, where he struggled with the simple usage of the English language to express himself while moving a motion on a decision taken on an earlier motion he had moved on the floor of the House.
Educated at Ibadan Christ Apostolic Grammar School and the Federal Polytechnic Offa in Kwara State, where he bagged his Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in Business Management in 1995, the Ibadan politician managed to mumble his reaction after being repeatedly corrected by the Speaker of the House.
In reaction to the video, an X user, Goriola Afolabi, writing under the handle @IamGorieawealth, praised Agboworin for his achievements in his constituency, arguing that the use of the English language is not as important as the good works of the representative. “Regardless of your agenda, we’re not bothered about that. Honorable Agboworin is the best representative Ibadan South East has ever had. Come to my constituency and see countless projects he has delivered—scholarships, security, infrastructure, etc.,” he posted.
Another user, Obanla Yusuf Ilesanmi (@obanlayusuf), insinuated that the video was posted by Agboworin’s political enemies to score a point. He said, “This post is political and the handler deliberately posted it to suit his agenda. As much as his people are okay with him, most especially his contributions towards the development of his constituency, then, the handler should rest. Please!”
However, Akinboade Adesola (@stratoblazed) disagrees. She said the challenge the politician has with the use of the English language will have a negative effect on his performance. Hear her: “His communication skills [are] the number 1 criterion for him to be a representative. How will he [be able to] table cogent matters affecting his constituency to the House if he can’t communicate? We elect rubbish and then cry foul when the chicks come home to roost.”
Here is the video.
