President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has renewed the appointment of Brigadier-General Mohammed Buba Marwa (Retired) as the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for a second five-year term.
The reappointment, announced in a press release from the State House on Thursday, will see the former Lagos military governor continue to lead the nation’s premier anti-narcotics agency until 2031.
Brig-Gen Marwa was first appointed to the role by former President Muhammadu Buhari in January 2021. In a statement endorsing the renewal, President Tinubu described the reappointment as “a vote of confidence in your onerous efforts to rid our country of the menace of drug trafficking and drug abuse.”
The President urged Marwa not to relent in “tracking the merchants of hard drugs, out to destroy our people, especially the young ones.”
Marwa’s initial tenure at the NDLEA has been noted for its vigorous operational tempo and widespread public advocacy. Under his leadership, the agency reported significant milestones, including the arrest of 73,000 suspected drug offenders and the seizure of over 15 million kilogrammes of various illicit substances.
The agency also intensified its war against drug abuse through nationwide public awareness campaigns.
Before his initial appointment, Marwa had served as the Chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee for the Elimination of Drug Abuse (PACEDA) from 2018. A seasoned administrator and retired military officer, he previously served as the Military Governor of both Lagos and Borno States.
His reappointment is expected to ensure continuity in the federal government’s ongoing campaign against drug trafficking and substance abuse.
