The Liaison Officer of Ikenne Local Government Area to the Governor of Ogun, Hon. Subomi Agesin, has described Ikenne as the intellectual and political heartbeat of Ogun State, noting that the local government has played a central role in the state’s development since its creation in 1976.Agesin made the remark in a statement issued on Monday in commemoration of the 50th anniversary of Ogun State.According to him, Ogun State’s Golden Jubilee offers an opportunity for reflection on past achievements and a renewed commitment to future responsibilities, particularly for Ikenne, which he said has historically shaped the ideological and leadership foundations of the state.“Ikenne has served as an intellectual laboratory for Western Nigeria, producing visionary leaders whose ideas continue to guide governance and development,” he said.Agesin cited the late Chief Obafemi Awolowo as a foremost example, describing him as a statesman whose policies on free education and rural development laid the groundwork for Ogun State’s progress. He also acknowledged the contributions of Chief (Mrs.) HID Awolowo, whom he described as a stabilising force in Nigeria’s political history, as well as the influence of the late Dr. Tai Solarin, founder of Mayflower School, whose educational philosophy promoted discipline, resilience and national service. The liaison officer further highlighted the impact of notable indigenes of Ikenne, including Chief Kehinde Sofola, SAN, and former Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, noting that their legal and intellectual contributions had strengthened Nigeria’s democratic and judicial institutions.Agesin said Ikenne had consistently produced trailblazers in education, sports and enterprise, referencing Olympic medalist Falilat Ogunkoya-Osheku and businessman Otunba Kunle Soname, whom he credited with advancing sports development and aviation in the country. He also commended Gov. Dapo Abiodun for what he described as inclusive and infrastructure-driven leadership, noting the governor’s Remo roots and developmental projects in the area.According to Agesin, projects such as the Sagamu–Iperu–Ode–Sapade road network and the Gateway International Airport have had significant impact on Ikenne and its environs. He urged youths and stakeholders in the local government to uphold the legacy of excellence associated with the area.“Ogun State at 50 is proof of what vision and action can achieve. Ikenne has always been a home of vision, and as we move into the next 50 years, it must also remain a home of action,”he said. Agesin issued a clarion call to the youth and stakeholders of Ikenne to maintain the standard of their ancestors. “Ogun State at 50 is a testament to what happens when vision meets action. Ikenne has always been the home of vision. Now, as we enter the next half-century, we must remain the home of action.”
