The Forum of State Coordinators of Musabaqah (FOSCOM) has condemned the bomb explosion at a mosque in Gamboru Market, Maiduguri, on Wednesday.
The condemnation is contained in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Thursday by the Forum’s Chairman, Alhaji Abubakar Kabri, and Secretary, Kamal’deen Akintunde.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that FOSCOM comprises state coordinators of the National Qur’anic Recitation Competition across the federation.
The forum expressed deep sorrow and heartfelt sympathy over what it described as a tragic suicide bombing in Borno State.
It said the attack was a “painful contrast” to the peace, spirituality and unity witnessed during the recently concluded 10-day Qur’anic recitation competition in Maiduguri.
“We are in deep sorrow over this incident, coming shortly after the successful four-decade anniversary of the Musabaqah celebrated by participants from all states and the FCT.
“We refuse to allow this tragedy to diminish the triumph of peace we witnessed under the leadership of Governor Babagana Zulum,” the forum stated.
It said it found solace in faith, praying that Allah forgives the deceased, comforts bereaved families, and grants Borno irreversible and lasting peace.
“The Nigerian Ummah stands firmly with our brothers and sisters in Borno. The bond strengthened during the Musabaqah remains unshakable in this hour of grief,” it stated.
FOSCOM called on President Bola Tinubu to further intensify efforts aimed at tackling insecurity across the country.
NAN reports that the attack occurred during Maghrib prayers on Wednesday evening, killing five worshippers and injuring at least 35 others.
