A fire outbreak at Ebute Ero Market, near the police station adjacent to Carter Bridge on Lagos Island, has been successfully contained by the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service. The fire, which started in the early hours of Saturday, November 30, 2024, destroyed several lock-up shops dealing in tools and kitchenwares but was prevented from spreading further.
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, in a statement released to The West by Amodu Shakiru, the agency’s spokesperson, commended the swift response of the firefighters, attributing their efforts to the successful containment of the blaze.
“Our firefighters from the Ebute Elefun, Dolphin, Sari-Iganmu, and Alausa stations worked tirelessly to confine the fire to its point of origin,” she said. “Their swift and effective intervention ensured that further damage was minimized, and no lives were lost.”

Adeseye further revealed that the operation had transitioned into a mop-up phase, with an enumeration exercise ongoing to assess the number of shops affected and estimate the value of losses incurred. She assured that an investigation to determine the cause of the fire was underway.
“While the fire has been extinguished, an assessment is being conducted to evaluate the extent of the damage,” Adeseye stated. “We are also working to uncover the exact cause of the fire.”
No casualties were reported in the incident.
