The Federal Government has announced that Tuesday, July 15, will be a public holiday in memory of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away at the age of 82. This declaration is part of the seven days of national mourning that President Bola Tinubu had previously ordered to honor Buhari.
The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement signed by the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Dr. Magdalene Ajani. The public holiday is intended to recognize Buhari’s dedication to Nigeria, his contributions to the country’s democratic development, and his lasting impact on governance and national progress.
“President Muhammadu Buhari served Nigeria with unwavering commitment and integrity, always prioritizing the unity and progress of our nation. This public holiday offers all Nigerians an opportunity to reflect on his life, leadership, and the values he championed,” the minister stated.
The minister also encouraged citizens to use the day to honor Buhari’s memory by fostering peace, patriotism, and national unity, in line with his vision for a prosperous and united Nigeria. National flags will fly at half-mast throughout the seven-day mourning period, which began on Sunday, July 13.
The Federal Government expressed its deepest condolences to Buhari’s family, the people of Katsina State, and all Nigerians, while praying for the peaceful repose of his soul.
