Residents of Ondo state will observe a statewide public holiday on Thursday, February 22nd, and Friday, February 23rd, 2024 in honour of former governor, Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, who died in December 2023.
The holiday declared by Governor Lucky Ayedatiwa was announced in a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Ebenezer Adeniyan.
The CPS explained that the two work-free days will allow the people of the state to participate in the ongoing burial activities for the late governor, which began last Thursday.
According to Obsequies released by the state government, Ajabue (traditional rites) will be held in Owo from 9 am to 4 pm on Wednesday, February 21. A Special Court Session will take place at 10 am in Court 1, Ondo State High Court Headquarters, Hospital Road, Akure.
Lying in State and Commendation Service will be held at Akure Township Stadium at 1 pm, followed by an Evening of Tributes at St Andrews Church, Imola Street, Owo, from 4 pm to 7 pm.
There will also be a Service of Songs at St Andrews Cathedral on Imola Street on Thursday, February 22, in Akeredolu’s hometown, Owo at 4 pm. While a Wake-Keep will be held at Maranatha Villa at 8 pm, also in Owo.
There will also be a candlelight procession and World Gyration organised by the Kegites Club starting from 8 pm till dawn.
