The All Progressives Congress (APC) has disqualified seven aspirants from participating in its forthcoming Osun State governorship primary, thereby narrowing the field ahead of the 2026 election.
Leading the list of disqualified aspirants is a former National Secretary of the party, Senator Iyiola Omisore. He was disqualified alongside former Deputy Governor Benedict Olugboyega Alabi, Dotun Babayemi, Akin Ogunbiyi, Senator Babajide Omoworare, Kunle Adegoke (SAN), and Babatunde Haketer Oralusi.
According to the party’s screening committee, the aspirants failed to meet a key constitutional requirement. The committee stated they did not provide evidence of sponsorship by at least five fully registered and financially up-to-date party members from each of the state’s Local Government Areas.
This requirement is stipulated in Articles 9.3(i) and 31.2(ii) of the APC Constitution and Paragraph 6(c) of the party’s specific guidelines for the primary.
In contrast, the screening committee cleared two aspirants to contest the primary. They are Mulikat Abiola Jimoh and Munirudeen Bola Oyebamiji.
The disqualification of such a prominent figure as Senator Omisore and several other heavyweights is a major development that will reshape the dynamics of the APC primary in Osun State. It leaves the race open for the two cleared candidates, barring any successful appeals against the committee’s decision.
