The Ogun State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed reports suggesting that stakeholders within the party are already considering candidates for the 2027 governorship election. The party described such discussions as premature and misleading, urging members to focus on supporting the current administration of Governor Dapo Abiodun.
The clarification came in response to a recent publication by a national newspaper, which claimed that APC stakeholders in Ogun State were favoring a particular individual, identified as Jelili Kayode Amusan, as their preferred candidate for the 2027 governorship race. The report, which sparked widespread inquiries from party leaders and members, was described as misleading by the party’s leadership.
In a press statement issued on Wednesday, Tunde Oladunjoye, the State Publicity Secretary of the Ogun APC, addressed the controversy, stating that the issue of the 2027 governorship candidacy is not currently under consideration by the party or its leaders.
“For the avoidance of doubt and with all sense of responsibility, the issue of the candidacy for the 2027 governorship ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) is not on the table of the party and its leaders for now,” Oladunjoye said.
He emphasized that the party’s primary focus is on supporting Governor Dapo Abiodun in delivering his legacy projects, which are expected to enhance the party’s prospects in future elections. “The present preoccupation of the party is to support our performing governor and leader of the party in the state, Prince Dapo Abiodun, in executing his unfolding legacy projects, which will certainly boost the standing of our party at the next general elections,” he added.
While acknowledging the right of members to express their preferences, Oladunjoye warned against actions that could lead to misinformation and unnecessary tension within the party. “While members have the right to project their preferred aspirants, we must be wary of misinformation that may heat up the polity and create needless rumors and rancor,” he stated.
The party also reminded members of its established structures and procedures for addressing internal issues, including disciplinary measures for those who violate party guidelines. “It is needless to remind members that the party has the established structure and procedure to apply the big sticks for those who overstep their bounds,” Oladunjoye said.
The Ogun APC’s statement comes amid growing political activities in the state, with various interest groups beginning to position themselves ahead of the next election cycle. However, the party’s leadership has made it clear that any discussions about the 2027 governorship race are premature and should not distract from the current administration’s efforts to deliver on its promises to the people of Ogun State.
Governor Dapo Abiodun, who assumed office in 2019, has been credited with initiating several infrastructure and developmental projects across the state. The APC’s call for unity and focus on these projects underscores its commitment to consolidating its achievements ahead of future elections.
As the political landscape continues to evolve, the Ogun APC has urged its members to remain disciplined and avoid actions that could undermine the party’s cohesion and electoral prospects.
