Nigeria is mourning the loss of Dr. Christopher Kolade, a revered public servant and corporate leader, who died on Wednesday at the age of 92. The news was confirmed by his family in a public statement on Thursday, which noted he passed away peacefully. The family expressed their gratitude for “his incredible life of faith and service” and for “God’s abundant blessings.”
Dr. Kolade’s career spanned decades and distinguished him as a pillar of integrity in Nigerian public life. Born in Erin-Oke, Osun State, in 1932, he was shaped by his early education at Government College, Ibadan, and later at Fourah Bay College in Sierra Leone.
He first rose to national prominence in the field of broadcasting, where his leadership culminated in the role of Director-General of the Nigerian Broadcasting Corporation. He then transitioned to the corporate sector, taking the helm as Chief Executive and Chairman of Cadbury Nigeria Plc. It was here he built a formidable reputation for principled leadership and sound corporate governance.
His commitment to public service led him to the diplomatic corps, where he served as Nigeria’s High Commissioner to the United Kingdom.
Following his diplomatic tenure, Dr. Kolade dedicated himself to academia, imparting his knowledge to future leaders. He taught at the Lagos Business School and the School of Media & Communication at Pan-Atlantic University, where he also served as Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council. He was later appointed Chancellor of McPherson University.
A lifelong champion for ethical practices, Dr. Kolade led several integrity-focused initiatives, including the Integrity Organisation Ltd GTE and The Convention on Business Integrity Ltd GTE. His contributions were recognized with numerous honours, such as the Order of St. Augustine from the Archbishop of Canterbury.
He is remembered as one of Nigeria’s most respected elder statesmen, leaving behind a legacy defined by service, principle, and an unwavering commitment to the betterment of his country.
