The Lagos State Police Command has issued a strong warning and ordered the suspension of a planned Egungun festival in the Oregun area, citing threats to public peace and safety.
The directive was announced in a statement on Wednesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, following the arrest of twelve suspects linked to circulating handbills and social media posts attributed to a group called “Oje Parapo of Oregun.”
According to the police, the publications were “warning and restricting the general public from freedom of movement, expression, and dignity to human persons,” an action they deemed unlawful.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, has directed the suspension of the festival, which was scheduled for November 27th and 28th, 2025. The Command stated that the event is “likely to lead to disturbance of public peace, safety, and public order in the State.”
The statement highlighted that the publications had already generated “fear and apprehension” among residents. It reaffirmed that the police would firmly protect the fundamental human rights of all citizens and visitors, and that no group is permitted to take laws into its hands.
The Command also referenced a similar incident in the Mafoluku area of Oshodi on November 23rd, where twelve suspects were also arrested for circulating materials aimed at instigating a breach of public order. Those suspects are under investigation and will be prosecuted.
CP Jimoh categorically warned the “Oje Parapo of Oregun” to desist from holding the festival, stating that security for the event could no longer be guaranteed. He vowed that the “full weight of the law” would be applied to anyone attempting to undermine the state’s peace and stability.
The general public has been advised to go about their lawful duties without fear and to report any suspicious activities to the police.
