A female adult was found dead after being trapped in a 170-foot deep well in Ijegun, Igando-Ikotun Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Lagos State, following a complex rescue operation, authorities confirmed.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service received a report of an emergency at Abuba Anthony Street, near Obalagbe Bus Stop, close to Fadeko International Hotel. Firefighters from the Ejigbo Fire Station were promptly dispatched to the scene, where they discovered the victim trapped in a well located at the frontage of a one-storey building under construction.
The building, consisting of six two-bedroom flats on a 648-square-meter fenced plot, became the focal point of a challenging rescue effort.
Due to the incident’s complexity, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service collaborated with the Nigeria Police and other emergency response agencies. After sustained efforts spanning over a week, the victim’s body was recovered on Thursday, July 10, 2025, in what officials described as a “snapped operation.”
Margaret Adeseye, Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, expressed her condolences, stating, “We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of the deceased.” She also commended the collaborative efforts, adding, “We appreciate the dedication of all agencies involved in this challenging operation.”
The victim was pronounced dead at the scene and handed over to officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU). The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) was on standby, while officers from the Nigeria Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, oversaw the proceedings.
A thorough investigation into the incident has been initiated, with further details under the jurisdiction of the Nigeria Police, according to the fire service. Authorities have not released the victim’s identity or additional information pending the ongoing investigation.
Maria Fadairo, Senior Public Affairs Officer for the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, issued the statement on July 11, 2025, emphasizing the coordinated response and ongoing efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
