Edo State House of Assembly today received list of commissioner nominees from the state Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo for confirmation.
This is sequel to a communication via a letter tittled “Request for the Confirmation of Commissioner nominees” read by the Clerk, Alhaji Yahaya Audu Omogbai and dated 7, January, 2025, requesting the assembly to screen and confirm the commissioner-nominees including Paul Ohonbamu, Washington Osifo, Paddy Iyamu, Andrew Ijegbai, Henry Olabisi Idahomen and Lucky Eseigbe.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. Blessing Agbabaku thereafter refered the letter to the House Standing Committee on Rules and Business to screen the nominees and report back to the House in one week.
Also during plenary , the Clerk Alhaji Audu Omogbai read another letter from the Governor to the House dated December, 19th 2024 and titled “Request for the Confirmation of Members of Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).
The nominees are Jonathan Aifuobhokhan, Anthony Aigbokhomhan, Suleiman Ikhuoria, Umoru Frank, Imafidon Osarodion, Asein Ojo Victor and Ighomo Egharevba Thomas.
The list was also refered to the House Standing Committee on Rules and Business to report back to the House in one week.
In the same vein , the House gave a second reading to a bill for a law to repeal secret cult prohibition law 2018 and to establish the secret cult and similar activities prohibition law 2024.
The bill which seeks to ammend the existing law is according to lawmakers who spoke in favour to strengthen and remove shortcomings .
The members are Hon Charity Aiguobarueghian, Hon Eric Okaka, Hon Sunday Ojezele, Hon Nicholas Asonsere, Hon Osamwoyiin Atu all spoke of the ills of cultism in the state, as it has made young women widows,children fatherless ,businesses closed or relocated for fear of attacks.
This bill the lawmakers say would help eradicate culture and as such be given speedy passage.
The bill was thereafter referred to the House Standing Committee on Security with a week mandate to report back to the House.
Summing up deliberations during plenary the Speaker,Rt Hon Blessing Agbebaku, announced that the lawmakers were still on vacation but decided to have an emergency sitting today to handle important and urgent issues that affect the governance in the state.
The House then adjourned sitting to Wednesday 15, January, 2025 after an adjournment motion moved by Hon Kaycee Osamwonyi and Seconded by Hon Eugene Inegbeboh.
