The family of the late elder statesman and Afenifere leader, Chief Samuel Ayo Adebanjo, has announced the funeral arrangements for the revered nationalist, who passed away on February 14, 2025, at the age of 96. The burial ceremonies, scheduled to hold from April 30 to May 4, 2025, will take place in Lagos and Ogun States.
In a statement sent to TheWest and signed by Ms. Ayotunde Ayo-Adebanjo, Mrs. Adeola Azeez, and Mr. Obafemi Ayo-Adebanjo on behalf of the family, the activities will commence with a Day of Tributes and Service of Songs on Wednesday, April 30, 2025, at Harbour Point, Victoria Island, Lagos, from 1:00 pm to 6:00 pm.
This will be followed by a Wake on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Chief Adebanjo’s country home in Isanya Ogbo, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm. The Church Service and Final Burial will hold on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at St. Phillips Anglican Church, Isanya Ogbo, Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The events will conclude with a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, May 4, 2025, at the same church, from 10:00 am to 12:30 pm.
The family expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support and requested continued prayers as they prepare to give their patriarch a befitting burial. “We covet your prayers for the family and your professional support as we continue with the preparations to give him a most befitting burial,” the statement read.
Chief Adebanjo, a staunch advocate for democracy and good governance, dedicated his life to the pursuit of justice and equity. His passing has been widely mourned across the nation, with tributes pouring in from political leaders, activists, and citizens who admired his unwavering commitment to Nigeria’s development.
