The Dangote Refinery has ramped up its crude oil refining capacity from 650,000 barrels per day (bpd) to 1.4 million barrels per day (mbpd), positioning it as the world’s largest single-train refinery by capacity.
This development was announced on Sunday by the President and Chief Executive Officer of the Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, during a media briefing in Lagos.
Dangote described the milestone as a major step toward achieving Nigeria’s self-sufficiency in refined petroleum products and boosting the nation’s export potential.
“We are proud to announce that the Dangote Refinery has scaled up its production capacity to 1.4 million barrels per day,” he said. “This expansion will enable us to meet local demand and strengthen Nigeria’s position in the global oil market.”
The $20 billion refinery, located in the Lekki Free Zone, Lagos, began commercial production in 2024 after nearly a decade of construction. Initially designed to process 650,000 barrels per day, the facility produces petrol, diesel, aviation fuel, and other petrochemical products for both domestic and international markets.
With its latest production boost, the refinery is expected to reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported fuel, stabilize local prices, and enhance foreign exchange earnings through exports.
Industry analysts say the expansion marks a major milestone in Africa’s industrial landscape, signaling Nigeria’s transition from a crude exporter to a refined products powerhouse.
