The community of the Republic of Benin resident in Abuja Nigeria has endorse the candidacy of Romuald Wadagni/ Talata in the next presidential election scheduled for April 12, 2026.
Former President of the Association of Benin in diaspora, Nigeria, Hounkpati Honore in a press brief in Abuja, said in a gathering that they want the whole world to know that there has been an impressive steady progress in the Republic of Benin in the past years and that they would like Wadagni/Talata as the next team to continue from where President Patrice Talon stopped
“We are using this opportunity to support the candidacy of Wadagni/Talata in the next presidential election, so this is a form of sensitization and a means of informing our people in diaspora of our mission”
Speaking on the current administration of President Patrice Talon, Honore said the current administration has done a lot by making life easier for people in diaspora in terms of making all necessary documents online, adding that there has been a steady development in the West African country and plead for continuity in the country. “We want the people to make the right choice, we are not forcing them to vote for our candidate, we have over two Million people resident in Nigeria and there is a cordial relationship existing between Benin and Nigeria”
It would be recalled that on December 7, 2025 “Military Committee for Refoundation” (CMR) in Benin announced the remover of Patrice Talon from office as president of the republic. Shortly after the announcement however, Benin’s Interior Minister Alassane Seidou said that “the Beninese Armed Forces and their leadership maintained control of the situation and foiled the attempt.
According to Honore, Benin is perceived as a model of Democracy in Africa with a strong governance structure and they hope to keep it that way. He pleaded for the support of the Nigeria president, Ahmed Tinubu to help in the success of their candidate in the next presidential election.
“I am not a politician, but there are laws guiding our country and the reason why the main opposition is not in the ballot paper is the fault of the opposition. So we have other opposition parties, It’s not just our candidate that is contesting, we are here to sensitize the people to come out on the election day and exercise their franchise by voting on election day.
Also speaking, the Benin Ambassador to Nigeria, Berenice Bankole said the process of the diaspora election will be well organized and will run smoothly in the various centers outside Benin where their people are residing. She noted that the Republic of Benin electoral commission will be organizing the election in Ten different countries including three cities in Nigeria where their people are residing.
“In conjunction with the constitution of the Republic of Benin, the people in diaspora should be part of the coming election. This will be done in about ten countries in the world where the people of Benin are resident and Nigeria is part of these countries. We have a lot of our people resident in Nigeria, so the election will take place in three different centers in the country, Abuja, Lagos and Ibadan,” she added.
According to the ambassador, insecurity will not hinder the election because they have put the right measures in place to ensure that the election is not affected.
