Academic activities have come to a halt at Lagos State University as staff unions have launched an indefinite strike. The decision was made on Thursday due to unresolved issues with the university management. The strike involves several staff unions, including the Academic Staff Union of Universities, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, the Non-Academic Staff Union, and the National Association of Academic Technologists. These unions form the Joint Action Committee.
The decision to strike was announced in a letter dated July 31, 2025, addressed to Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello. The letter was signed by the chairs and secretaries of the respective unions. They directed all university staff and those at affiliate campuses, including the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja and the Lagos State University Epe campus, to stop working and leave their posts immediately.
The letter stated, “Following the decision made at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of the Lagos State University Staff Unions, we inform you that the indefinite strike action has commenced as of Thursday, July 31, 2025.
This strike will continue indefinitely until our demands are met by the appropriate authorities. Therefore, all staff members are directed to withdraw their services and vacate their official duty posts immediately.
“We appreciate your support and assure you of the unions’ best regards.”
