The Lagos State Chairman of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Mr. Femi Olaniyi, has emerged as the party’s consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos State governorship election.Olaniyi, popularly known as Ferrari, was adopted by delegates and stakeholders from all 20 local government areas of the state during the party’s gubernatorial primary election held in Somolu on Tuesday.
The exercise was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).Announcing the result, the Chairman of the SDP Governorship Primary Electoral Committee for the state, Primate Henry Amike, said the party had fully complied with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026.
“In accordance with the provisions of the Electoral Act 2026, which grants political parties the option of selecting candidates either through direct primary election or consensus, the Lagos State SDP family has today unanimously adopted and endorsed Mr. Femi Olaniyi (Ferrari) as the sole gubernatorial candidate of our party for the 2027 Lagos State Governorship Election,” Amike said.
“Having fulfilled all constitutional and procedural requirements of the party and the Electoral Act, and following the consensus endorsement by stakeholders and delegates, I hereby officially declare Mr. Femi Olaniyi Ferrari as the duly returned gubernatorial candidate of the SDP for the 2027 Lagos State Governorship Election.”
Earlier, the Chairman of the SDP Governorship Screening Committee for Lagos State, Oloye Adegboyega Adeniji, described the candidate as a man of proven integrity. “We have found Ferrari very worthy to serve the people of Lagos State in credentials and characters,” Adeniji said.
“He is a man of integrity, and with SDP, there is true hope of security, peace and prosperity for the state and Nigeria.”
In his acceptance speech, Olaniyi, who also serves as the Chairman of the Forum of SDP State Chairmen in Nigeria and a former South-West Zonal Secretary of the party, promised to deliver a safer and more prosperous Lagos if elected in 2027.
He said his administration would prioritise security, infrastructure, job creation, education and healthcare.
According to Olaniyi, the outcome of the primary election represents a collective victory not only for party members but for all Lagos residents seeking meaningful change.
“Today’s result is not my victory alone,” he said. “It belongs to every member of SDP and every Lagos resident who wants safer streets, better schools, cleaner neighbourhoods and real economic opportunities.
“It belongs to the market woman in Oshodi, the tech founders in Yaba, the students in UNILAG and the fisherman in Badagry. This is your mandate.”
The SDP candidate pledged to give urgent attention to security and public order, adding that Lagos must function efficiently around the clock. He promised investment in smart policing, improved street lighting and the deployment of technology to strengthen security across neighbourhoods in the state.
On infrastructure, Olaniyi vowed to expand rail and water transportation, rehabilitate roads and address flooding challenges affecting vulnerable communities.
“No Lagos resident should spend four hours in traffic,” he said. “We will build infrastructure that moves people efficiently and improves productivity.”
The governorship candidate also promised policies aimed at boosting small businesses and creating a more enabling environment for technology and creative industries to thrive. He said his administration would simplify processes for starting and growing businesses in Lagos to stimulate economic growth and employment opportunities for residents.
