Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu has been named the Grand Patron of the African Paralympic Committee and Para Sports organizations across the continent.
While speaking at a brief ceremony held at the Conference Room of the Office of the First lady on Monday, Sports Minister John Owan Enoh applauded Senator Tinubu’s contributions to sports development in Nigeria. He said the First Lady has shown commitment to empowering youth, women and men through sport. Enoh expressed hopes that Tinubu’s position will bring new life to para-sport.
On his part, African Paralympic Committee President Samson Deen thereafter decorated Tinubu with her new title.
Deen appealed to other African first ladies to also serve as grand patrons in their countries.
In her remarks, Tinubu recognized sport’s ability to unite diverse communities. She said the African Para Games embody inclusion by giving differently-abled athletes a platform to showcase their talents.
She said: “The presence of these dedicated officials here today reminds us of the incredible power of sports to inspire, unite, and transform lives.
“The African Para Games and Para Sports have been instrumental in providing a platform for differently-abled athletes to showcase their exceptional talents, determination, and resilience.
“I believe that it is our collective responsibility to ensure that every individual, regardless of their abilities, has the opportunity to shine and be recognized for their skills and achievements. As Grand Patron, I will support these dedicated individuals and organizations involved with the African Para Games and Para Sports to further its mission within my humble capacity”. She assured
The First lady expressed gratitude to the African Para Games and Para Sports for the recognition while looking forward to the journey of working together to promote the rights of Para-athletes.
