The Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Education has appealed for government assistance for Miss Aminat Alege, a student of Adams Memorial High School who lost one of her eyes during a fracas between the students of Agege Junior high School and Abibat Mogaji Secondary School.
It would be recalled that the Speaker mandated the Committee to make investigations into the incident at a plenary session recently.
In an attempt not to be arrested amongst the warring students, Miss Alege ducked behind a car after leaving the mosque but got hit by teargas canister shot by the police in am attempt to disperse the students.
Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Sangodara Mosunmola, who pleaded on the victim’s behalf, said as part of investigation into the unfortunate incident, teachers of the school, the parents of the victim and the Commissioner of Education and others were invited for discussion.
While commending the Speaker, Rt. Hon. Mudashiru Obasa, for helping to meet Miss Aminat’s hospital bills, Hon. Sangodara stated that though she had lost one of her eyes, the government should kindly grant her scholarship.
The lawmaker said Aminat had been crying incessantly over the fate of her education.
She added that schools should be mandated to embark on guidance and counseling as a subject in a bid to properly guide students.
In her contribution, Hon. Olumegbon Omolara said that moral and ethics should also be added to the schools’ syllabus to help nurture students’ minds.
It is noteworthy that Miss Alege is a 12-year-old pupil in JSS 3.
