Thirteen new justices were sworn in today at the Lagos State Governor’s office in a move designed to strengthen the judicial system of the state. The ceremony, presided over by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to enhance judicial efficiency and uphold the rule of law.
While addressing the newly appointed justices, Sanwo-olu emphasized the critical role of the judiciary in maintaining societal balance and ensuring justice is served impartially. He highlighted the importance of integrity, diligence, and commitment to duty as essential qualities for the justices to embody in their new roles.
“The judiciary is the cornerstone of our democracy,” Governor Sanwo-Olu stated. “Your appointments are not just a testament to your professional achievements but also a call to service for the people of Lagos. I urge you to dispense justice without fear or favour, maintaining the highest standards of integrity.”
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by key government officials, legal luminaries, and family members of the appointees. Chief Judge of Lagos State, Justice Kazeem Alogba, also addressed the gathering, underscoring the expectations placed on the new justices to deliver judgements that reflect fairness and uphold the law.
The appointment of the thirteen justices is seen as a strategic move to address the backlog of cases and improve the overall efficiency of the judicial system in Lagos. The new justices, each bringing a wealth of experience and expertise, are expected to significantly contribute to the state’s legal landscape.
In his concluding remarks, Governor Sanwo-Olu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting the judiciary through various initiatives aimed at enhancing the working conditions and capacity of judicial officers.
