A non-governmental organization, Safe Space Initiative in helping to Create Safe Spaces for Survivors of gender-based violence (SGBV) held a stage play “Mirror Mirror “ in Abuja as a call for action against gender-based violence in society.
The play which was held at the Olusegun Obasanjo Auditorium, Ministry of Justice, Abuja was written by Omolara Lamikanra and directed by Priye Diri.
Mirror Mirror – a stage play was produced by the Safe Space Initiative, as a means to enlighten and bring to the fore the issues around gender-based violence. The play also focused on providing easy remedies through the introduction of the mobile app Herfessions to enable survivors to find help anonymously.
The writer of the play, Omolara Lamikanra says “Mirror Mirror” is a play about gender-based violence adding that it focuses on trying to see things from everyone’s point of view.
“So it’s not just about what is wrong, but telling everyone to look at the mirror and see how we all have in one way or the other exhibited violence. Its’ not just the individual who is involved but the society that accepts it. It is a ripple effect and we are trying to show this and also make people laugh and enjoy themselves while addressing this issue,” she said.
Safe Space Initiative is a nonprofit organization using media and technology to fight gender-based violence. The initiative says they began planning one of the best stage plays in Abuja Months ago to mark the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.
Speaking on the 16 days of activism, the Executive Producer, Osasu Edobor says the 16 days of activism symbolizes 16 days of action, talks, and 16 days of call for action on gender-based violence against women and the girl child in Nigeria, Africa, and the globe.
“The world is a global village and being the era of technology, tech has come to stay so there are approaches and avenues we need to adopt in addressing certain issues. Technology is one of tolls because it is very important and very sacrosanct that we need technology as a powerful toll in addressing issues like this,” she added.

Mirror Mirror is a poignant and heartwarming stage play that delves into the lives of a middle-aged couple, taking the audience on an emotional rollercoaster ride filled with rage, humor, laughter, and nostalgia.
The play delves into the lives of a young couple and how their upbringing, socialization, and past experiences all play a part in their behavioral patterns. The event was staged in support of the Dorothy Njemanze Foundation and Jewel Hive Initiative. Additionally, received support from AWDF, WARDC, and HiiL.
Safe Space Initiative as an organization deploys the use of new media and technology tools in helping women and the girl child break free, find shelter, and recover from sexual and gender based-based violence including domestic violence, trafficking, and all other forms of exploitation.
It would be recalled that the Ogun state government recently and as part of activities for the 16 Days’ Activism Against Gender-Based Violence in the state, pledged it would provide a befitting building to serve as a shelter for people who have been sexually harassed or subjected to other forms of molestation in the state.
