The Oyo state government has dropped a stern warning for Public school teachers, Headmasters/Headmistresses and Principals in the state against the collection of illegal fees or levies from the students, insisting that education is free across the state.
Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Salihu Adelabu, sounded the warning on Monday, while om a tour of schools to check the compliance rate of government directives for schools to resume for second term academic activities around the state capital, Ibadan.
Prof Adelabu emphasised that education is free in all public schools across Oyo state and that there is no basis for collection of illegal fees from the pupils and students as well as from their parents.
He however expressed satisfaction with the level of compliance of teachers and students to resume for academic activities as stipulated in the government school calendar for 2023/2024 academic session.
He said: ” I want to warn the Teachers that never must they charge the students and parents because Education is free in Oyo State, also to the parents whose their Children are yet to come, should allow them to come to school as teachings and learnings have commenced in the schools.
“Today is the first day of resumption in our public Primary and Secondary Schools in Oyo State. The enthusiasm of the Teachers and Students are very okay; luckily enough, based on what I have seen, not less than 70% of our Students resumed and almost 97% of the staff are in the schools,” the commissioner noted.
