Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu, Ogun Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, has urged the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT) in the state to continually improve capacities and add values to the educational sector.
Arigbabu stated this while declaring open a 3-day leadership workshop organised by the NUT for its State Executive Council Members, held in Abeokuta on Wednesday.
The commissioner, represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Oluwatosin Oloko, said that it was important for teachers to put in their best and always improve on their intellectual capabilities.
He noted that the workshop would develop the skills and knowledge of union leaders in problem-solving, communication strategies and negotiation.
Arigbabu also emphasised the importance of leadership and learning in achieving educational excellence.
He commended the NUT leadership for their initiative and proactiveness in collaborating with the Swedish Teachers Union and Education International to organise the workshop.
“Let me also enjoin you as teachers, that we must continually put in our best and always make efforts to improve on our capacities, so as to add more value to the educational sector in the State.
“Let us endeavour to be our best at all times and seek for more knowledge at any given opportunity, so that we can become better educators,” he said.
Earlier, The State Chairman of NUT, Noah Sewakanu expressed gratitude to the state government for its support and implementation of policies that impacted the lives of teachers and students in the state.
Sewakanu stressed the need for effective leadership and dialogue in achieving positive change and advancing the cause of quality education .
“Let us commit ourselves to learning and growing as leaders, so that we can effectively serve the interest of our teeming teachers and advance the course of quality education in the state,” he said.
The Ogun Head of Service, Kehinde Onasanya, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Teaching Service Commission, Mrs Melutia Ogunremi, underscored the importance of training for teachers in the state.
In his remarks, the Chairman of Ogun State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB ) Dr Olufemi Majekodunmi, emphasised the need for training and retraining of teachers.
The National Coordinator of the NUT Study Circle Project, Solomon Igbelowowa, explained that capacity building, the essence of the leadership workshop was essential in a dynamic world where knowledge and experiences were constantly evolving.
