The Lagos State House of Assembly has reaffirmed its decision to impeach Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker and maintain Mojisola Lasbat Meranda as his replacement, stating that over two-thirds of members are united behind the new leadership.
In a statement issued by Hon. Ogundipe Stephen Olukayode on Saturday, the Assembly emphasized that the January 13 decision to remove Obasa was final and conducted in line with statutory provisions. “The position of the House remains the same, and nothing has changed,” Ogundipe said.
The press release described Obasa’s continued claims to the speakership as “uncalled for and unparliamentary,” urging him to accept the decision to avoid destabilizing the Assembly. “Any attempt to heat up the polity will be resisted by the majority of distinguished members who unanimously elected Rt. Hon. Meranda,” the statement read.
Background
Obasa was impeached during a plenary session where the majority of lawmakers cited concerns over governance and accountability. Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, was subsequently elected as the new Speaker. The Assembly has since defended its actions as being within its constitutional rights.
“All members were elected from their various constituencies across the state, and we all have the inalienable rights under the necessary statutory orders to remove their principal officers, including the Speaker,” Ogundipe said.
Call for Peace
Ogundipe called on Obasa to “toe the line of peace and harmony” and align with the Assembly’s decision, warning that his refusal to do so could escalate tensions. “Peace we want in Lagos, and peace we will achieve,” he added.
Obasa, however, has rejected the impeachment, insisting he remains Speaker of the 10th Assembly. He addressed his followers and the press on Saturday in Ikeja where he claimed that the process which removed him as speaker is illegal. He categorically stated that he remained the speaker of the state House of Assembly.
