Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has issued a public apology to residents over the severe traffic congestion caused by ongoing repairs on the Independence Bridge at Bonny Camp, promising improved traffic management measures to ease commuters’ hardship.
The governor, who inspected the repair site on Friday morning, acknowledged the frustration of motorists and residents after Wednesday’s gridlock paralyzed movement in the area.
“I sincerely apologize to all Lagosians for the severe traffic congestion experienced yesterday,” Sanwo-Olu said. “I understand the frustration, delays, and disruption this has caused in your daily lives. As someone who also moves through this city, I feel your pain.”
He explained that the repairs, initiated by the Federal Ministry of Works, were long overdue, with planning spanning three years to prevent a potential bridge collapse.
“This repair has been in the works for over three years, carefully planned to avert a disaster,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “The structural integrity of the bridge had deteriorated, and delaying this intervention any further would have put lives at risk.”

To mitigate the impact, the governor said his administration had deployed additional traffic officers and security personnel to manage flow around the construction zone. He also urged businesses to adopt flexible work arrangements.
“We are working closely with all relevant agencies to improve traffic management and find immediate solutions,” he said. “I urge businesses and organizations across Lagos to explore flexible work arrangements, including remote work and hybrid models.”
Sanwo-Olu appealed for patience, emphasizing that the repairs were necessary for public safety.
“Lagosians, I ask for your continued patience and cooperation,” he said. “Your safety remains our priority, and we are committed to ensuring that our city remains not only a hub of progress but also a place where infrastructure serves the people effectively.”
Authorities expect the repairs to continue for several weeks, with contingency plans in place to minimize disruptions.
