The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has responded to a viral video showing a confrontation between its staff and a cargo agent at Murtala Mohammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos. In an official statement released on tuesday, FAAN clarified the nature of the incident and debunked claims circulating online.
A video had trended online earlier in the week, in which a female persenger was seen dragging with a supposed airport personnel in the presence of security agents.
According to FAAN Director, Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Obiageli Orah, the individual involved in the altercation was not a passenger, as earlier speculated, but a cargo agent engaged in unauthorized activities at the airport. The agent reportedly refused to pay the mandated cargo charges, leading to a tense exchange during which airport equipment was damaged.
“We would also like to clarify that there was no form of molestation by FAAN staff, neither was there any request for a bribe from our staff during the incident. This was simply an act of blackmail. Our staff was simply ensuring that the correct levy was paid.
We urge all cargo agents and members of the public to note that cargo operations should be restricted to designated cargo areas, utilizing proper vehicles, personnel, and pay the levies. Our cargo policies are designed to ensure adherence to international best practices, prevent damage to airport facilities, and prioritize customer service and safety.” Orah said
FAAN emphasized the importance of adhering to proper cargo procedures at the airport, noting that all cargo activities should be carried out in designated areas with appropriate personnel and equipment. This policy, according to FAAN, is in line with international standards aimed at maintaining operational efficiency and safeguarding airport infrastructure.

To curb violations, FAAN imposes a N5,000 fine on cargo agents who fail to comply with regulations, for improper handling of cargo outside designated terminals and damage to carousels. The authority underscored its commitment to ensuring safe and seamless airport operations, urging both cargo agents and the public to comply with set guidelines.
The spokesperson said: “we impose a fine of N5,000.00 (Five Thousand Naira) on non-compliant cargoes for the following reasons: Failure to utilize designated cargo terminals and damage to carousels resulting from improper cargo handling.”
