The Lagos State High Court in Ikeja has declared the removal of Mudashiru Obasa as Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly unconstitutional, illegal, and null and void.
Justice Yetunde Pinheiro delivered the ruling on Wednesday, nullifying all proceedings and resolutions passed by the Assembly on January 13, 2025, the day Obasa was ousted and Mojisola Meranda was installed as Speaker.
Obasa had filed a suit challenging the legality of his removal, naming the House of Assembly and Meranda as defendants.
He contended that the impeachment occurred while the Assembly was on recess and he was out of the country, arguing that the session lacked proper authority and violated the Assembly’s rules and the 1999 Constitution.
The court upheld Obasa’s claims, ruling that due process was not followed in his removal. Consequently, Obasa is reinstated as Speaker, and all decisions made during the contested session are invalidated.
Additionally, the court awarded Obasa N500,000 in damages.
This judgment effectively ends the leadership dispute within the Lagos State House of Assembly, restoring Obasa to his position and nullifying Meranda’s brief tenure.
