The Lagos State House of Assembly is set to investigate allegations of cash for grades and certificate racketeering against the Lagos State University.
Hon. Ajani Owolabi, Chairman of the House Committee on Education (Tertiary), who raised the issue under ‘Matters of Urgent of Public Importance’, noted the allegation on social media while noting the meritorious performance of the institution over the years.
While expressing his disappointment over the allegation, Hon. Oladipo Ajomale, Chairman House Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights,Public Petitions and LASIEC, who is an alumnus of the institution, said the issue should be investigated.
In his contribution, Hon. Sa’ad Olumoh, Chairman House Committee on Economic Planning and Budget, suggested that the Information and Communication Technology, ICT, department of the institution should also be invited.
“Investigation should not be limited to the management and the certificates of culprits should be revoked,” he said.
According to Hon. Desmond Elliot, Chairman, House Committee on Works and Infrastructure stated that greedy people should not be allowed to tarnish the image of the school.
The Speaker, Rt. Hon. (Dr.) Mudashiru Ajayi Obasa, who doubted the source of the allegation, said that from his personal experience noted that he didn’t agree with the source of the news but quite agreed that there is need for us to verify the authenticity of the news and if it does happen we correct it,” he said.
To this end the House requested that the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, LASU Vice Chancellor and other stakeholders of the Institution appear before the Committee on Education Tertiary for fact findings.
