The Ijebu-Ode Local Government has formally authorised the Fusengbuwa Ruling House to commence the process of selecting a new Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland.
The approval, dated January 6, 2026, and issued by the Office of the Executive Chairman, marks the official start of the succession mechanism to fill the stool left vacant after the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona in July 2025.
In a letter addressed to the Head of the Fusengbuwa Family and obtained by our newsroom, the Secretary to the Local Government, Hon. Oke Aijodun Adebanjo, stated that the approval followed clearance from the Ogun State Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.

“The Fusengbuwa Ruling House is hereby authorized to begin its internal Selection Process in accordance with the Customary Laws of Ijebuland and the Chieftaincy Regulations of Ogun State,” the letter read.
The local government has mandated the ruling house to formally notify it of the “Date, Time, and Venue of the Nomination Exercise” within 14 days of receiving the notification.
The council stated that its representatives “will attend strictly as observers,” underscoring its role in facilitating due process rather than direct involvement in the family’s internal affairs.
“This approval is issued to facilitate due process and remains without prejudice to the traditional rights and internal procedures of the Ruling House,” the letter concluded.
This development sets in motion the long-awaited traditional procedures. The Fusengbuwa Ruling House, which is the next in the rotational line, is now expected to convene, screen eligible princes, and nominate a candidate to be presented to the kingmakers of Ijebuland. The process comes after a period of heightened political activity and public interest in the succession to one of Nigeria’s most revered traditional stools.
