The General Overseer of Victory Life Bible Church (VLBC), Rev. Lawrence Achudume, has appealed to Gov. Dapo Abiodun not to assent to the proposed bill on pregnancy termination.
Achudume made the appeal during Sunday service in Abeokuta, where members of the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) attended a thanksgiving service as part of activities marking the union’s 50th anniversary.
He described the proposed legislation, which he said was being presented as a safe pregnancy termination pill, as a move that could encourage abortion and the loss of unborn lives.
The cleric said he received information about the proposed bill from contacts in the United States and a prominent Christian leader from Plateau State.
He added that he subsequently contacted the leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), which reportedly presented him with a letter appealing to the governor not to sign the bill.
Achudume urged Abiodun, whom he described as a decent leader who loves children and humanity, to reject the proposal in the interest of protecting human life.
He said Nigeria had experienced enough bloodshed and should not support policies that could encourage further loss of innocent lives.
The cleric also urged Nigerians to respect human life and called on the governor to ensure that his administration’s legacy was not associated with approving a law that could facilitate the termination of unborn children.
He commended the state government for maintaining peace, saying Ogun had remained free from acts of terrorism because of what he described as the peaceful disposition of the government.
The Ogun State House of Assembly had on Sept . 25 passed a bill seeking to reduce maternal morbidity and mortality, promote safe motherhood and reproductive health rights, and establish conditions for the safe termination of pregnancy in accordance with legal indications and for connected purposes.
The bill, with the short title “H.B. No. 036/OG/2026 – Ogun State Safe Termination of Pregnancy Law, 2026”, was passed during plenary presided over by the Speaker, Oludaisi Elemide, at the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.
The passage followed the presentation of the report of the House Committee on Health by its Chairman, Wahab Haruna, who moved for the adoption of the report.
The motion was seconded by the Chief Whip, Hon. Omobola Bakare, and supported by the lawmakers through a voice vote.
The bill was subsequently considered and adopted clause-by-clause before the Committee of the Whole House.
The motion for its third reading was moved by Babatunde Tella and seconded by Lukman Adeleye.
It was unanimously supported by the lawmakers through a voice vote, after which the Clerk/Head of Legislative Service, Mr Sakiru Adabakin, read the bill for the third time before the lawmakers.
The Speaker thereafter directed that a clean copy of the bill be transmitted to the state Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, for his assent.
