The Ogun State Government has officially announced the burial plans for the late Awujale of Ijebuland, His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 91. According to a statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, Mr. Tokunbo Talabi, the final rites will take place today, Monday, July 14, 2025, at Ogbagba Court, Igbeba, Ijebu-Ode, starting at 4 PM.
Oba Adetona, who reigned for 65 years after ascending the throne on April 2, 1960, was one of Nigeria’s longest-serving monarchs. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from political figures, traditional leaders, and citizens across the nation. His reign, which saw a blend of traditional values and modern development, played a crucial role in the socio-economic and cultural growth of both Ijebuland and Ogun State.
In a statement, the Ogun State Government urged residents to “remember the late monarch’s family in their prayers” as they prepare to honor the memory of a revered ruler.
The burial ceremony will attract several dignitaries, including Governor Dapo Abiodun, key state officials, traditional rulers from across Yorubaland, federal and state lawmakers, and prominent Ijebu sons and daughters. The event is expected to combine traditional rituals with modern elements, reflecting Oba Adetona’s unique leadership.
Authorities have also issued a traffic advisory, urging motorists to take alternative routes as large crowds are expected at the event. Security and traffic personnel have been deployed to maintain order in Ijebu-Ode.
The government said the burial ceremony will be broadcast live on major TV stations and online platforms, allowing Nigerians nationwide to participate in paying their final respects.
