The Labour Party (LP) has called for the immediate resignation of Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, accusing his administration and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) of orchestrating a “democracy assassination” by allegedly undermining legislative processes and manipulating elections. The demands were issued during a fiery press conference on Wednesday, where the party also denounced APC chieftain Abdul-Azeez Adeniran (Jandor) for “malicious” attacks against its 2027 governorship candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour.
In a statement signed by LP National Publicity Secretary Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, the party condemned the APC’s role in the controversial impeachment of Lagos State House of Assembly Speaker Rt. Hon. Mojisola Meranda on January 13, 2025, and the subsequent reinstatement of her predecessor, Hon. Mudasiru Obasa, who was ousted over corruption allegations. The LP likened the move to a “military commando, Gestapo-style operation,” accusing the APC of installing a “cabal of democracy assassins” to control the state.
“Lagos is now a captured territory by those who believe one god’s vote trumps a million ballots,” Arabambi declared, referencing the party’s claim that the APC rigged the 2023 gubernatorial election in favor of Sanwo-Olu. Official results from the poll showed Sanwo-Olu securing 762,134 votes (66%), while Rhodes-Vivour garnered 312,329 votes (27%). Jandor, then the PDP candidate, trailed with 62,449 votes (5%).
The LP accused Sanwo-Olu of “abdicating his constitutional duties” for 49 days amid the leadership crisis in the Assembly, alleging collusion to violate sections of the 1999 Constitution related to legislative oversight. The party cited the late columnist Pini Jason’s “Law of Corruption,” asserting that the APC’s actions reflect a pattern where “voices fall silent once in power.”
“Governor Sanwo-Olu must resign or face impeachment for enabling fraud and embezzlement,” Arabambi stated, demanding accountability for Obasa’s alleged misappropriation of state funds.
The LP also dismissed Jandor—who recently defected from the PDP—as an “APC mole” seeking to “infiltrate and destabilize” its ranks ahead of the 2027 elections. The party accused him of spreading “deliberate falsehoods” against Rhodes-Vivour to undermine his candidacy.
“Jandor is a known agent of destruction,” Arabambi said. “Our doors are closed to his expansionist agenda. Arc. Rhodes-Vivour remains our sole candidate to liberate Lagos in 2027.”
The LP reaffirmed its confidence in Rhodes-Vivour’s prospects, claiming alliances are being forged statewide to secure victory. “The people’s mandate, stolen in 2023, will be reclaimed,” Arabambi vowed.
