Contrary to claims by the media office of a former governor of Kogi state, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has declared that Yahaya Bello is not in its office and remains wanted for alleged N80.2billion money laundering charges.
Ohiare Michael, Director, Yahaya Bello Media Office had claimed early on Wednesday that the former governor had decided to honour the invitation extended to Bello over alleged criminal charges.
Michael said the wanted former governor made the decision “after due consultations with his family, legal team and political allies.”
But a release issued a few hours after Michael’s claims by Dele Oyewale, Head, Media & Publicity at the EFCC denies the media report that Bello visited the EFCC office earlier in the day.
Oyewale said: “Media reports today that a former Governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello is in the holding facility of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, is incorrect.
“The Commission wishes to state that Bello is not in its custody.”
According to Oyewale, the former governor who loves to refer to himself as “White Lion” is still wanted by the anti graft agency.
“Bello, already declared wanted by the Commission for alleged N80.2billion money laundering charges, remains wanted with a subsisting warrant for his arrest.” The EFCC spokesperson said.
