Nigeria has lost a giant of stage and screen. Professor Adekola Akangbe Gabriel Oyewo, popularly known as Kola Oyewo, died on Friday.
He was 80 years old. His son, Adetoyese Oyewo, broke the news on Facebook.”My heart is heavy,” he wrote. He remembered his father as a man filled with love, wisdom and strength.
The family is asking for prayers. Oyewo spent decades shaping Yoruba theatre and Nigerian culture.
Prof Oyewo performed on stage and in films. He also taught, trained younger generations and fought to keep local traditions alive.
For many, he was more than an actor. He was an institution.
