Despite the failure of the Nigerian National Team to secure a final match ticket at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations, prominent industrialist and philanthropist, Alhaji AbdulSamad Rabiu, has announced that he will honour his financial pledge to the team, awarding them $500,000 USD.
Samad made the announcement on Thursday after the Super Eagles semi-final defeat in Rabat. They were edged out of the race for a slot in the final match after a dramatic 4-2 penalty shootout loss to hosts Morocco, following a tense 0-0 draw after 120 minutes of play.
In a personal statement released on his verified Facebook page, Rabiu consoled and praised the team for their spirited performance, which saw them reach the final four of the competition.
“You fought with your hearts, gave your all, and showed true courage and determination on the pitch. Though it wasn’t meant to be this time, you have made every Nigerian proud,” Rabiu stated in his message to the players.
He emphasized the value of their effort over the result. “Sometimes, even our best efforts don’t bring the outcome we hope for, but the spirit, passion, and unity you displayed are what truly matter. You left everything on the field, and that is worthy of celebration.”
The billionaire founder of the BUA Group confirmed the payment as a gesture of appreciation for their journey. “As a token of appreciation for your remarkable journey and effort, I am still going ahead to fulfill the pledge of $500,000 USD. This is in recognition of your hard work, dedication, and the joy you have brought to our nation.”
This substantial personal bonus is a separate gesture from the official match allowances managed by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF). Rabiu concluded with a forward-looking note: “Keep your heads high, Super Eagles – the experience, lessons, and spirit will fuel even greater success next time.”
Nigeria will now face Egypt in the tournament’s third-place playoff on Saturday, while Morocco advances to the final against Senegal.
