Nigerian police operatives engaged in a deadly gunfight with armed bandits in Benue State early Wednesday, killing 12 suspects and recovering a cache of weapons, authorities confirmed. The operation, however, claimed the life of Inspector Terfa Anyiatse, who was fatally wounded during an ambush, prompting heartfelt tributes from the Inspector-General of Police (IGP).
In a statement issued by the Force Headquarters in Abuja, police revealed that the clash occurred around 2:00 AM on 19 March, when operatives of the Benue State Police Command’s Operation Zenda Joint Taskforce were ambushed en route to a criminal hideout in Agwabi, Tombo Ward, Buruku Local Government Area. A fierce exchange of gunfire followed, with officers overpowering the assailants. While 12 bandits were “neutralised on the spot,” others fled with injuries. Inspector Anyiatse, however, “succumbed to fatal gunshot wounds sustained during the encounter,” the statement noted.
Subsequent raids in Daudu and Makurdi led to the recovery of seven locally made pistols, three AK-47 rifles, and the arrest of five suspected armed robbers and 32 alleged cultists.
The operations formed part of a nationwide crackdown ordered by Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun to tackle violent crimes, including kidnapping, banditry, and robbery.
IGP Egbetokun praised the courage of the operatives: “Our officers displayed extraordinary bravery in the face of grave danger. Their unwavering commitment to protecting our communities is a testament to the ideals of the Nigeria Police Force.” He also mourned Inspector Anyiatse, stating: “We have lost a hero who paid the ultimate price in service to our nation. My deepest condolences go to his family, colleagues, and loved ones. May his soul rest in peace.”
The police reiterated their resolve to dismantle criminal networks, urging citizens to remain vigilant. “The Force will not relent in its efforts to ensure the safety of all Nigerians,” said Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. “We implore the public to report suspicious activities promptly. Together, we can defeat these threats.”
