The Ogun government in collaboration with the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has commenced a sensitisation campaign against illicit drugs among undergraduates in the state.
Speaking to students of Ogun State Institute of Technology, Igbesa, on Wednesday, Mr Anthony Uga, the FRSC sector commander in Ogun,
admonished students to desist from illicit drugs and excessive consumption of alcohol.
Uga urged them to desist from any forms of drugs, noting that it had cut many lives short.
He posited that illicit drugs would do no good, but shortened the future of young ones who were meant to become leaders of the country.
Uga told the students that they should not board vehicles whose driver was under drug or alcoholic influence, saying that “the danger of illicit drugs while driving is high and can kill instantly”.
He said, ” I want you to be great, among all of you, we have the President of the Republic, we have great men, It is your attitude and resilience that will make you get to the top.
“You can bring back the prosperity of this nation, the prosperity of a nation belongs to the youth. The moment you lose it to illicit drugs, the country is in danger,” he said.
In her opening remarks, the Deputy Governor of Ogun State, Mrs Noimot Salako -Oyedele , implored the student to shun excessive consumption of illicit drugs.
Salako-Oyedele, represented by Mr Daud Ojugbele, said that the youth remained the hope of the nation, saying they could only rescue the nation if they were in the good and right state of mind.
“You are the hope of the nation, desist from taking illicit drugs,” he said.
Speaking on the theme: “Danger of Illicit Drugs and Excessive Alcohol”, representative of National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Famwang Garba, submitted that many dreams had gone to extinction because of drug abuse.
He stressed that the number of death caused by consumption of illicit drugs is alarming.
He noted that illicit drugs would not solve any problem, but would bring about dropping out of school, job loss, depression, anxiety among others.
Famwang urged the students to shun intake of drugs and alcohol.
Responding, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr Abiodun Oluseye, commended FRSC and Ogun State government for sensitising the students populace.
Oluseye, represented by the Director of Entrepreneurship, Adegbite Adewale , noted that the campaign came at the right time.
The rector said that the students were just resuming to school and that it would prevent the majority of them from being influenced.
