Reactions have continued to trail the decision of authorities at the Ogun State Government-owned of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) in Ago-Iwoye to check female students for bras before being allowed to write examination.
A video had emerged online showing presentatives of the school authorities conducting physical checks on female undergraduates to ascertain whether they wear bras or not before being granted access into the univeristy campus.
Not a few people including the students have frowned at the development, scolding the school for paying major attention to a minor issue rather than focusing on how to improve academic excellence.
A visibly outraged student had told journalists: “What happened is because we are having exams. They don’t do this every time. They will check you if you are wearing a bra. It has happened to me once, even though I felt embarrassed. That is OOU and their nonsense,”
However, the Student Union Government government (SUG) of the institution has clarified that the policy is not new and is part of the overall policy of the OOU authorities to ensure decent dressing of their students, before, during and after examination. The SUG said it was not solely because of the examination.
SUG President, Muizz Olatunji, in a statement, explained that, “OOU Student Union has engaged with the institution to explore alternative approaches to addressing indecent dressing, focusing on respectful and dignified interactions between students and staff.”
He added that the “No bra, no entry” rule is not a new directive but a continuation of the university’s policy on student conduct.
