The Abia State High Court has directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognize the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) led by Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam.
The court order, issued by Justice C.U. Okoroafor of the Federal High Court, Uzuakoli Division, mandates the immediate update of INEC records to reflect the decisions of Dr. Aniebonam’s BoT, including the reconstitution of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC).
The court directs INEC to update its record to give recognition to decisions of the board, including the constitution of the National Working Committee (NWC).
Oginni Olaposi Sunday, the NNPP’s National Secretary, confirmed the development in a statement issued in Abeokuta on Sunday. He described the judgment as a “compelling mandate” for INEC to recognize Dr. Aniebonam as the party’s Founder and Chairman of the BoT.
He said: “The good news is that the compelling judgement of the Abia state high court is for INEC to recognise and deal with Dr. Boniface Okechukwu Aniebonam, the Founder and Chairman Board of Trustees of the New Nigeria People’s Party.
“This simply means that INEC is under command to amend its records to reflect new development in NNPP” Oginni said, adding that Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, previously the self-acclaimed leader of the NNPP, had been expelled from the party, along with Elder Buba Galadima and other members of the NWC loyal to Kwankwaso, including Dipo Olayoku, Kawu, and Dr. Ahmed Ajuji.
Oginni urged INEC to expedite its compliance with the court’s decision, stressing the importance of adherence to the rule of law in resolving internal party disputes.
