Prior to the closure of 13 markets by the ministry of Environment across Kosofe area of Lagos , the popular Mile 12 International Market has officially reopened for business.
The market executives following a successful resolution meeting with the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) at their office at ijora olopa ,lagos , all modalities have being meet in the compliance of a healthy and clean environment to strive , the market which was initially included among 13 major markets shut down by the Lagos State Government over widespread environmental violations have always being at the front burner of compliance.
The Chairman of Mile 12 International Market, Alhaji Shehu Usman Jibril, led the market’s delegation to the crucial meeting, where terms were reached to lift the closure on the popular market.
In his press statement made available to thewestng.com states that ; after the meeting, Alhaji Shehu Usman confirmed that the market had complied with the stipulated environmental standards and had been granted permission to resume operations, according to him ,
“We have resolved the closure issue with LAWMA, and I am pleased to announce that Mile 12 International Market is now officially open for business,” he also stated that “The interest and welfare of the people come first which is the paramount obligation of any government of organizations, hence Our market plays a unique and vital role in the state’s food supply chain, especially as a hub for perishable commodities.”
He further emphasized the importance of Mile 12 as a central distribution point for agricultural produce, supplying over 500 smaller markets across Lagos and beyond. He reaffirmed the market’s commitment to sustaining proper sanitation practices going forward.
Though originally listed among the 13 sealed locations on the Ketu–Ikorodu axis due to persistent sanitation issues, Mile 12 International Market has now been formally separated from the list, following swift compliance and negotiations.
The reopening comes as the Lagos State Government continuous Zero Tolerance for Waste campaign, aimed at enforcing environmental compliance across markets and commercial spaces. LAWMA has reiterated that only markets demonstrating clear adherence to sanitation protocols, including the use of appropriate waste bins and engagement with licensed PSP operators, would be allowed to operate as strict measures will be in place to stop any occurrence, shehu said .
