Amid the ongoing leadership tussle in the Lagos State House of Assembly, no fewer than 27 lawmakers from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) are reportedly considering defecting to the opposition Labour Party (LP).
According to the National Publicity Secretary of the Julius Abure-led LP National Working Committee, Dr. Abayomi Arabambi, the defectors include 16 first-term lawmakers, seven second-term legislators, and four third-term members, spanning across the state’s three senatorial districts.
Arabambi, in a statement issued Tuesday in Abeokuta, Ogun State -a copy of which was made available to TheWest, revealed that the majority of the lawmakers planning to cross over are from Lagos West, the state’s most populous senatorial district.
He attributed their decision to dissatisfaction over alleged political interference in the Assembly’s affairs, particularly regarding attempts to reinstate former Speaker Mudashiru Obasa.
He stated that the lawmakers were angered by Monday’s alleged invasion of the Assembly complex by the Department of State Services (DSS) and viewed it as an attempt to reverse the leadership change that saw Mojisola Meranda elected as Speaker.
“These lawmakers insist that Obasa has been legitimately removed and that the Assembly has the constitutional right to determine its leadership.
“They are ready to join us because Labour Party remains the most viable opposition in Lagos and Nigeria, especially given the crisis that has left the PDP in political disarray,” Arabambi said.
He further declared that the Labour Party is strategizing for the 2027 elections, with Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour set to contest for Lagos governorship again. He expressed confidence that the party’s influence would extend beyond Lagos to other geopolitical zones across the country.
